Tasmanian stud spend up on colt by popular shuttle stallion at Inglis sale.
Grenville Stud is banking on Too Darn Hot's star continuing to rise after spending up on one of the Darley shuttle stallion's sons at Friday's Great Southern Weanling Sale.
The McCulloch family operation went to $335,000 for his colt out of the Magic Albert mare La Magique at the Inglis offering.
Too Darn Hot, a son of Dubawi, has been quick to announce himself in Australia, with products including four-time Group 1 winner Broadsiding, and will this year stand for $250,000, plus GST, which Bart McCulloch said made the colt an attractive proposition.
"Obviously, he's a sire that's massively in demand, his fee's $250,000 this coming season and he was booked up straight away, so you're looking at a longer wait to send a mare to him to get a foal out than what we've done here," he said.
"So I guess we've fast-tracked thigs a little bit and we've bought a lovely colt in the process."
McCulloch said the colt would most likely be reoffered as a yearling next year.
"He's a relatively early foal, so that'll give us a few options with what we do," he said.
"But we'll get him home and get him through the Tassie winter, have a look at him in the spring and make a decision on the best way to go."
The colt, who was born on October 6 ad was offered by Merrivale Stud, is the second living foal from La Magique and is from the family of former star European three-year-olds Dr Devious, Dancing Rain and Archway.
"This colt was faultless from out point of view," McCulloch said.
"He was a beautiful mover, well-grown, had a great hindquarter, a good action (and) great temperament.
"The team at Merrivale have done a fantastic job. They presented exceptionally and they've done a great job growing him out."
Grenville's big buy was the highest-priced lot of the sale at the fall of hammer, although the filly by Wootton Bassett out of the Frankel mare Jadeerah that was initially passed-in later sold to Peter Morgan and Gall Bloodstock for $350,000.
Other good early results included a Zoustar colt from the family of Redoute's Choice who sold to Glenbeigh Farm for $210,000 as the third lot of the sale, while a colt by Toronado out of a half-sister to Santa Ana Lane was bought by Maluka for $200,000.
