Mares in-foal to Extreme Choice were a precious commodity at last week's Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale and Day 1 of the National Yearling Sale showed why.

A son of the Newgate Farm stallion equalled the record for the highest price paid for a yearling at the mid-year sale when sold for $850,000.

The Baramul Stud-prepared colt was bought by Yulong Investments, who entrusted Magic Millions' Cina representative Amy Cheng to land the winning bid.

"He's a lovely colt and I know the team love the stallion and have already had great success through the exploits of their Magic Millions purchase Devil Night," Feng said.

"The opportunities don't come that often to buy a top colt by Extreme Choice.

"He was a standout on type and pedigree and I know Yulong will be excited to race him in their colours."

The Extreme Choice colt, is out of the Northern Meteor mare Samarmeteors, a half-sister to Group 1 winner and Shinzo's dam Samaready, which makes him a half-brother to Prost.

Extreme Choice had three of the top four lots of the sale with his daughter from Queen Magdalene, who was also offered by Baramul, selling to Springwood for $240,000.

His filly out of Sheza Shamardal sold for $160,000, while the only non-Extreme Choice to figure in the top four lots of the day was the colt by Nature Strip's sire Nicconi from I'm Gonna Cashew selling to Peter Robl for $190,000.

All up, Day 1 grossed $5.8 million, which was up almost $600,000 on last year's first day when 10 few lots were offered and the clearance rate was 67 percent, three percent down on Monday which contributed to the average of $44,961 being down on last year's $47,454.

The median was $28,000, compared with $29,000 from 12 months ago.

"I'm pleased with today," Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said.

"There's been some increases across the board and an equal record top price of $850,000 for an outstanding Extreme Choice colt sold to Yulong.

"There was spirited bidding on the (top selling) colt and outside of him we had some 13 lots sell for $100,000 or above and we had 54 horses sell internationally.

"It's obviously a little selective out there, but when a horse walks into the ring that has vetted out and looks the part there's some good strong bidding."

The National Yearling Sale continues from 11am Tuesday.
