RANDWICK June 7

Best Bets

RACE 4 – (6) SHROPSHIRE LAD: Lightly raced improver justified confident support when he resumed with a quality win in a C1 over 1100m at the Scone carnival, responding well under pressure after covering plenty of ground. He's handled affected conditions confidently in both wins and has the figures to measure up to the rise in class. Holds ample scope for improvement with the addition of winkers.

RACE 7 - (15) NELLIE LEYLAX: Talented 4YO import had four trials before making his local debut with a game third behind Hollywood Hero and Cool Jakey over this course and distance in very heavy going on May 24, not surprising as he had earned a big reputation for his wet ability in the UK where he won all five of his nine starts on soft and heavy surfaces. Sure to be fitter and with a 5.5kg drop in weight after hot apprentice Anna Roper takes her claim he is well placed on his preferred ground.

RACE 8 – (4) IN FLIGHT: Honest mare excels over this distance and is at her best with give in the ground as she showed winning her latest start in the Listed Bright Shadow on a heavy track at Doomben, an effort that had plenty of merit as she had to shoulder her way into the clear under 58kg before spearing away to win by almost two lengths. Hard to fault her record at Randwick and she clearly rates as the horse to beat with a 3kg drop in weight.

TRIAL POINTERS

RANDWICK May 30: SHADIZI is an import to follow through next season as he could be a high class performer. He's a stakeswinner of four of his eight starts in France up to 1600m and is ready to make his Australian debut after two easy trials. Had plenty to offer in a strong 1045m heat won by ESTADIO MESTALLA (65.16; 35.22), being kept under a hold from start to finish but really taking the eye with the way he made late ground between horses.

ROSEHILL May 29: Deep Field filly COSMIC EAGLE handled the conditions confidently for a soft win in her 900m heat (55.18; 35.39). She's now had four trials and is well educated for her debut. Pierro gelding COLD BREW looks primed for a maiden win after winning the fastest of the five heats over 1030m (62.59; 35.49) under a choke hold. He's been placed in three of his four starts and could have won this heat by a wide margin if his rider had let him stride at any stage. Other heat winners worth noting included WORLD ALLIANCE while those taking the eye with quiet trials included HOW MUCH BETTER, PEREILLE and CENTRAL COAST.

WARWICK FARM May 22: A full session on the polytrack by necessity due to the huge amount of rain that severely restricted the grass tracks at all courses. Poly trials are never a reliable guide but due to the need to give horses their required work there were a number of classy runners led by the G1 star JOLIESTAR. She finished last in her open heat over 740m (45.71; 34.53) but was seven and eight deep all the way and was never tested by James McDonald to finish about three lengths from the winner.

WARWICK FARM May 13: The talented HEADLEY GRANGE impressed with his late work in his 790m heat. Pleasing trial from Group One star KIMOCHI will have her ready for her Brisbane campaign. She was too classy for her rivals in the fastest of the three 1200m heats (73.36; 35.41) in her first trial since she failed in the All Aged Stakes last month. She had an issue after that race and it was good to see her work strongly, sitting second outside the lead and responding well when called on to stride clear to score by more than two lengths. CROSS TASMAN is an unraced Super Seth colt with a bright future.

WARWICK FARM November 19: Blue Point filly SAPPHIRE ROSE won the fastest of the two 2YO heats over 802m (47.01; 33.62).
