25 June 1812 – 25 June 2025.
On this Wednesday, 25th June, the Mauritius Turf Club celebrates 213 years of existence, marking a remarkable milestone in the Club's distinguished history. It was on this very date in 1812 that the first-ever horse racing event in Mauritius took place.
The initiative was spearheaded by Sir Robert Farquhar, the British governor at the time, with the support of his wife, Dame Maria Farquhar, who generously offered a gold cup to the winner of the main race on that inaugural day.
More than a sporting event, the occasion had a noble aim: to foster reconciliation between the English and French communities, representing the new and former colonial powers on the island. With the establishment of the MTC and the development of the Champ de Mars, the founding fathers of Mauritian horse racing laid the foundation for the oldest racing institution and racecourse in the Southern Hemisphere.

A living heritage in constant evolution
Beyond the sporting aspect, the Champ de Mars has long served as a treasured social hub for the residents of Port Louis. Families would gather there for leisure, and for years, the grounds were a haven for young footballers from the surrounding neighbourhoods, who played informal matches in a spirit of camaraderie and joy.
A site steeped in national history
The Champ de Mars is inseparable from the national story of Mauritius. It was here, in 1968, that the official flag-raising ceremony was held to commemorate Mauritian independence. Over the years, the venue has welcomed several distinguished royal visitors, including Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret, Princess Anne, and Prince William.
A resilient institution, always moving forward
The MTC's journey has not been without its trials. In recent years, the Club has faced significant challenges yet, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, it has demonstrated remarkable resilience.
The revival of the MTC is now officially set to begin on 26th July 2025.
A proud legacy, a continued commitment
Today, the Mauritius Turf Club proudly marks 213 years of service to the nation. With dignity, dedication, and professionalism, it remains unwavering in its mission to promote horse racing as a sport of passion, heritage and national unity.
