When Sheik Mohammed and his brothers sat around under the palms at Zabeel planning Godolphin we don't think he could have dreamed of such a weekend.
Even a severe thunderstorm and a change in track conditions could not stop Good Cheer winning her seventh race in seven starts in the Kentucky Oaks. Godolphin have a very good filly here. She's with Brad Cox and Luis Saez had the ride and she is a daughter of Medaglia d'Oro. As usual there was a gap after her at the finish with Drexel Hall 32/1 second and Bless The Broken third on 18/1.
And then on Saturday came the Kentucky Double when Sovereignty held off Journalism in a thrilling finish to take the Kentucky Derby! The track was so sloppy it was surprising that the horses, obliging animals that they are, agreed to run on it especially as it meant that they had to carry several inches of mud as well as the jockey who was also adding several inches of mud to his weight. But the champions that they are Sovereignty and Journalism fought it out to the bitter end and Baeza, who only got into the race when Rodriguez was scratched, came flying home like a speedboat to take third. Bill Mott trains the Godolphin colt and Junior Alvarado was in the irons – he got fined for over-use of the whip in the finish but understandably said he was too busy to count!
And then we cross the Atlantic and at Newmarket on Saturday Ruling Court won the 2000 Guineas for Godolphin with Appleby-Buick the responsible parties. Buick had to make the choice between Ruling Court and stablemate Shadow of Light, both nice colts, and luckily for him he chose the right one although Shadow of Light was not disgraced in coming third. In between them was the favourite Field of Gold who also ran well but could not get in front of the winner. It was also a 2000 Guineas double for Ruling Court as the Kingman colt had won the Listed Jumeirah Guineas at Meydan earlier.
And so we go to the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and the lovely filly Desert Flower landed the prize and the clean-sweep of the weekend's Classics for Godolphin. We saw pictures of Desert Flower being walked around after arrival as she had become a bit "hot" travelling over but she soon calmed down and did not seem to have lost any energy. She's by Night of Thunder who is starting to make his mark as a stallion and Appleby says they have some more of his offspring at home. Ollie Sangster saddled the second and third home – Flight 28/1 and Simmering 33/1 so looks like his stable is in form.
Godolphin also had another win at Churchill Downs when Think Big won the Twin Spires Turf Sprint.
The amazing feature of Godolphin's Classic Winners is that three of them are home bred. Ruling Court was an expensive purchase but then they've got their money back with him.
