A Happy Ending for the Belmont at Saratoga meet

3 minute read

The weather even caused two events from Sunday to be moved to Monday.

Saturday was a terrible day with the dirt track an absolute quagmire so here's the results and except where the horses had form on everything don't necessarily take these as good guides to the future.

The Gr 2 Bed o' Roses went the favourite way with Ways and Means beating Scylla in a 7 horse field.  Favourite Raging Sea was only third in the Ogden Phipps behind Dorth Vader 7/1 and Dazzling Move 10/1 but again the track was a shocker.

The Belmont Gold Cup 3200m went to Parchment Party 5/1 from Yo Daddy 6/1 and Padiddle 12/1 and Flatten The Curve fourth but it's a wonder that any of the horses could still stand after a very gruelling slog through the mud which also applied to the turf track.

La Cara won the Acorn for Dylan Davis who was having a good run although not quite as good as John Velazquez who rode four winners on the day.  Look Forward 12/1 was second and odds-on favourite Good Cheer just hated the going.  Scottish Lassie was third and if she was Scottish she would have been used to the conditions.

The New York Stakes went to favourite She Feels Pretty although she didn't look that pretty at the end of it but Cherie Devaux's good filly scored her fourth win in a row. Beach Bomb, a South African bred, was second on17/1 and Bellezza third for Clement-Prat,

Sunday kicked off with the Just A Game and a much drier track although the first half of the card went through on a track rated yielding.  Dynamic Pricing took this at 10/1 from favourite Excellent Truth and Special Wan 6/1 third.  English raider Choisye was never in it.

The Woody Stephens saw Patch Adams put his best hoof forward and win this from Madaket Road and Big Truzz.

The Belmont Stakes saw a star performance from Sovereignty who defeated arch rival Journalism by 3 lengths with Baeza back in third.  Sovereignty thus wins the bragging rights with two legs of the triple crown plus he did not run in the Preakness which was the leg Journalism won.  Would Journalism have done any better if he had not run all three legs – he was the only runner to do so.  And/or would Sovereignty have won that race had they gone to Pimlico?  Who knows.  They are both top horses and we will see what happens by Sovereignty looks a cert to get 3yo and possibly horse of the year.

The. Manhattan was moved over to Monday's card and it provided our happy ending to the story of this weekend when Miguel Clement, who only recently lost his father Christophe, got his first Grade 1 with Deterministic who was given a very confident ride by Kendrick Carmouche.  He nearly got the quinella until Intergration stuck his nose I front of Far Bridge but first and third is not bad going, and then Miguel was interviewed by wife Acacia who was presenting for one of the TV channels – very touching.
