Waardah and Hamish shine at Goodwood

3 minute read

Waardah and Hamish were the highlights of the Sunday card at Goodwood, winning the 1m2f Listed Agnes Keyser Fillies Stakes and the Listed Tapster Stakes.

The Owen Burrows-trained Waardah appeared to appreciate the overnight rain which fell on Goodwood, bouncing back to her best to earn Black Type. The daughter of Postponed was a debut winner at Sandown as a juvenile but had failed to show the same level of form at Newmarket at Southwell since, unable to make the frame.

Making her second appearance in Listed company, the three-year-old travelled in midfield under Callum Rodriguez whilst the well-backed Anna Swan attempted to make the running for the William Haggas team. Rodriquez asked Waardah to make an effort after the furlong pole and she responded well to finish two-and-three-quarter lengths ahead of the long-term leader at the line. Second-favourite Tattycorum finished third.

Speaking to Racing TV, winning trainer Owen Burrows said: "She's always a filly that we have liked, we hoped she could do something like that. I saw the forecast and thought it would be worth giving her an entry in this. Luckily the rains came, I probably think the softer ground was important to her.

"We will have to see what our summer weather does but she's certainly one going into the autumn that we should be able to have a bit of fun with."

In the 1m4f Listed Tapster Stakes, Willam Haggas' veteran Hamish made it win number thirteen on his favoured softer ground under an inspired Tom Marquand drive.

It was set to be a fascinating contest with €1,400,000 purchase and German Derby winner Palladium making his stable debut for John and Thady Gosden, having won on a sole hurdle outing at Huntingdon for Nicky Henderson.

Easy in the market and sent off at odds of 11/1, Palladium made most of the running and was travelling well with two furlongs to go but it was the evergreen Hamish who was able to make a late challenge under Tom Marquand. Already the winner of twelve previous races, success at Goodwood took the nine-year-old close to the million pound career earnings milestone. Military Academy also passed the early leader to take second, but there was only a neck from first to second, with Palladium a head behind them after a thrilling finish.
