Appleby mulls Royal Ascot possibilities for Shadow Of Light

Amidst celebrations of a job well done on Sunday at Newmarket, trainer Charlie Appleby was able to issue an update and provide running plans for 2000 Guineas winner and third, Ruling Court and Shadow Of Light.

As confirmed in the aftermath of the 2000 Guineas, Ruling Court will head to Epsom for the Derby.

"Both horses came out of their race fine with no problems at all and when they were led out they did all the right stuff," said Appleby.

"The plan as we stand at the moment is for Ruling Court to head to the Derby but like I said, we will just let everything calm down for a week. But I see no reason why we shouldn't be going there and the plan is to go straight there."

There had been some question marks around the stamina capacity of Shadow Of Light, winner of the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes and Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes, but the half-brother to Earthlight appeared to stay on well in the closing stages of the mile contest.

"With Shadow Of Light, you can watch the race as many times as you like to but Mickael (Barzalona, jockey) said he just wished he had something which had taken him through the race a little bit longer. He said I saw the race develop away from me and when I gave my horse a squeeze, I didn't expect him to have that acceleration.

"Mickael thought he stayed and the mile was no problem. We can look at all the stats and speed figures and he is a quick horse, there is no denying that. We'll again let it settle down and decide whether we go for the St James's Palace or have a crack at the Commonwealth Cup. It may be the Commonwealth Cup is the easier option, but I don't see any real reason why we should stray away from a mile."

Paddy Power have installed Shadow Of Light as the 8/1 favourite for the six-furlong Commonwealth Cup and a general 7/1 chance for the mile of the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.
