“A 4lb rise in the weights probably underestimates her” - Sam King’s daily wagers

Sam King is back with three selections on Tuesday…

Racing returns to Pontefract this afternoon, and there are a couple of decent wagers to be had on the card.

Consistency isn't something on the CV for many in the five-furlong Class 6 handicap at 4.42, and in truth, the same can be said for my selection, Herakles, who has found the frame just once since winning over this trip at Ripon last June.

That said, his Ripon success, which was a fairly snug one at that, came off a 3lb higher mark, and he's now dangerously handicapped with an eye-catching reappearance effort under his belt.

Paul Midgley's charge was having his first start since November when sixth at Newcastle last month, a performance that is easy to upgrade when you look at the trouble he met in-running under jockey Mark Winn.

Sent off an unfancied 25/1 chance in Class 4 company, Herakles still looked to be travelling with plenty of zest when blocked off multiple times at the two-furlong marker. It's easy to say he would have won on that occasion, but I'd have been surprised if he didn't fill one of the first three places home, and a 1lb drop in the weights for that effort will help.

A further benefit to his chances is that David Nolan is a seriously underrated jockey and one that, in my eyes, doesn't get the credit he deserves. He will need to be on the ball from stall eight this afternoon, but in a race that's lacking depth, Herakles may be good enough to capitalise as he drops down two grades to Class 6 level.

1pt Win – Herakles

Odds – 11/2

Over at Southwell, I Can Boogy posted a decent speed figure in defeat at Newcastle last time and may well get off the mark in the one-mile Class 6 handicap at 6.00.

The Nigel Tinkler-trained filly didn't show much in her first two outings in handicaps, but the penny appeared to be dropping when she stayed on nicely to finish runner-up at Newcastle sixteen days ago.

That event came over seven furlongs, and she hit the line well, suggesting the step up to a mile on a stiff all-weather surface like Southwell should play to her strengths.

The third-place horse, Flamborough Head, went two spots better to score at Redcar yesterday to give the form a timely boost and off a mark of 47, she should have every chance.

1pt Win – I Can Boogy

Odds – 11/2

Later on the same card, Party Bear looks to hold particularly strong claims as she bids to follow up in the Class 5 handicap over seven furlongs at 6.30.

She only had to be nudged out under hands and heels riding to land a similar Class 5 when upped to this trip for the first time at Wolverhampton seventeen days ago, shaping as though she could easily have more to offer.

That success came off a mark of 64, and, in all truth, a 4lb rise in the weights probably underestimates her.

Karl Burke is +35.85 to a £1 level stake with his three-year-old runners at Southwell, and this unexposed daughter of Kodi Bear can help add to the statistic.

1pt Win – Party Bear

Odds – 11/4
