Opera Ballo bounds clear for Kempton success

Opera Ballo was cut to as short as 8/1 with bookmakers for the 2000 Guineas after making it two wins from as many starts in breathtaking style at Kempton on Wednesday evening.

The three-year-old son of four-time Group 1 winner Ghaiyyath made an everlasting impression when winning the same novice contest as last year's 2,000 Guineas winner Notable Speech on his debut in January and was subsequently sent off 11/10 for the one-mile conditions event, that is named the "European Road To The Kentucky Derby".

With Charlie Appleby's number one jockey William Buick in the saddle for the first time, Opera Ballo raced enthusiastically behind stablemate Olympus Point before moving up powerfully to his outside as the field turned for home. Once allowed to lengthen his stride by Buick, Opera Ballo quickened up smartly to put the race to bed in the final furlong and ultimately costed home for a commanding four-length success from the 94-rated Richard Hughes-trained Hott Shott, with a further length back to Roger Varian's Epsom Derby entrant Saddadd.

Paddy Power initially trimmed the winner to 14/1 (from 16s) for the opening colts Classic at Newmarket in May, but punters were evidently impressed, and the same firm was quick to cut Opera Ballo to 8/1 in the aftermath.

"It was very smooth," Buick said on Racing TV. "I suppose we came here today not really knowing exactly what to expect. I thought it was a warm race with a lot of horses with proven form from novices recently or from last year.

"I was very pleased with him. I do think he's a work in progress, but it's all there for him. He's two from two now and I thought he showed plenty there. The Ghaiyyath's are very exciting. They really showed up at the end of last season and they progress."
