Stall thirteen ‘not ideal’ says Fellowes as Luther bids for French Classic redemption

Charlie Fellowes has labelled Luther’s draw of stall thirteen for Sunday’s Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly as “not ideal” this morning.

The Charlie Fellowes-trained three-year-old finished just a neck behind Camille Pissaro when the pair met in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains at Longchamp earlier in the month.

Both Luther and Camille Pissaro were set a stiff task with wide draws at Longchamp but while the latter has been handed gate one at Chantilly, the former will have to start his Classic challenge from stall thirteen.

Fellowes and Kieran Shoemark, who will be entrusted with steering Luther to victory at Chantilly on Sunday, suffered Classic heartbreak when Shes Perfect was demoted to second in the French 1000 Guineas having finished first-past-the post.

The duo will now return to France for a bid at Classic redemption, although Fellowes admits he was hopeful of a better draw.

Speaking on Sky Sports Racing, Fellowes said: "I thought they might do me a solid and give me a nice draw, but it doesn't seem to work that way. It's OK, it's not ideal but it's not disastrous.

"We will have a good look through the field and try to work out where we think other horses are going to go and go from there. He was electric out of the stalls in France and if he did that again, it would be absolute madness to take him back.

"We will try to work out what we think others are going to do, there's a lot of horses in there who I don't think will want to be right on the pace. I think there's quite a few that would want cover and want to settle and have something to aim at.

"We will have a rough plan, but Kieran knows the horse and the horse is utterly bombproof, so I think Kieran will be able to make a plan as he jumps out of the gates."

Leading contenders Ridari and Cualificar have been drawn next to one another in stalls eleven and thirteen, with the latter to be ridden by William Buick for the first time as he teams up with Andre Fabre's exciting Godolphin colt.

The Gosden-trained duo Detain and Bowmark have been handed single-figure gates in stall six and eight, while the supplemented King Of Cities will start from ten under James Doyle. The other supplemented contender Sinileo, who is the choice of Wertheimer et Frere's retained rider Maxime Guyon, will have few excuses from gate four.

Nitoi has been drawn widest of all in eighteen, while the Qatar Racing-owned Parachutiste and Aga Khan Studs-owned Azimpour will break from seventeen and sixteen.
