Newly-crowned WA Greyhound of the Year, Miss Envy, has overcome a toe sprain and is now cherry-ripe to rip into the iconic Golden Easter Egg series at Wentworth Park, starting this Saturday night.
Miss Envy flew out of WA today with her co-trainer Steve Shinners to prepare for the first heats of the series that will lead to the final at Wentworth Park on April 12. She remains a juicy $13 chance with TABtouch to win the final.
Shinners said a recent trial following Miss Envy's recovery from the toe injury – which he described as similar to a sprained ankle - that ruled her out of the last month's Group 1 Australian Cup at The Meadows, had proven she was back to her speedy best. She returned to racing with an impressive third in the Sky Racing Perth Cup final at Cannington on March 15.
"The heat and final (of the Perth Cup) have topped her off and the trial the other day was unbelievable … second-quickest time around there they tell me," Shinners said.
"Her run home time was electric, so she's back to her best. It's a long way to travel, as we know from here, and it does take a lot of planning. But it's an awesome feeling and that's what we do it for.
"You want to be in the big races and have the good dogs and we give her a chance. Hopefully she flies the flag for WA and she's nice odds, too, if the punters want to have something small on her each-way."
Shinners said that despite her modest physical stature, there had always seemed to be something special about Miss Envy.
"She's one in a million," he said.
"She gets to the track and she sizes up the other dogs that are around … she's got a bit of an aura around her when she's at the track."
Shinners' co-trainer wife Krystal said Miss Envy had taken them on a "wild ride" for the past 12 months.
"We knew she was a star since she was a puppy and since then she's just built and built," Krystal said.
"It's been such a wild ride, we can't even breathe. She's a star and she makes us really happy – we're just so proud of her."
