3 minute read

Mepunga Tully has handed trainers Jeff Britton and Angela Langton their first Australian Cup after a dominate performance throughout the series in 2025.

It was a finish for the ages with just a bob of the head separating Mepunga Tully and Tim Zoo – who was aiming to go back-to-back Australian Cups. Vincent Bale finished third.

Mepunga Tully stopped the clock in a time of 29.64 seconds, after a 5.05 second first split over the 525 metre distance.

"To win a race like this is truly special," handler Craig Solkhon said post-race.

"This win is everything for us… it's all the hard work and hours."

Mepunga Tully is owned and bred by Hall Of Famer Barry Smith. She is a daughter of Fernando Bale and Mepunga Isla.

The 2025 Australian Cup is Mepunga Tully's first Group race victory. She is a winner of 15 races from 46 starts banking more than $400,000 in prize money.

Trainer Jeff Britton went into the race feeling like he had a genuine chance, not just running for luck.

Punters also had faith, sending her out favourite in front of Vincent Bale.

How will Jeff Britton celebrate his first Australian Cup? According to Corey Smith, with a VB out of the cup. Pictures to follow, I hope.
